Panasonic Corporation formerly known as Matsushita Electric Industrial Corporation is a Japanese multinational corporation. Electronics is also headquartered in Kadoma City Osaka Prefecture Japan. But the company does everything related to electronics under several names most notably Panasonic and National.

Panasonic Company history

  • Matsushita Electric was founded in 1918 by Konosuke Matsushitas a seller of double light sockets. But in the 1920s Panasonic began releasing its products on a regular basis.
  • In 1927 he produced a set of bicycle lights which were first marketed as a national brand. During World War II the company operated factories in Japan and other parts of Asia producing electronic components and equipment. For example lighting fixtures engines irons radio equipment and the first vacuum tubes.
  • After the war due to the disintegration of the occupying forces the Panasonic Group was divided into MEI and MEW.

Panasonic acquired Sanyo

  • It was then partially reorganized into the Keiretsu category. and started supplying radios and appliances. Plus bikes for Japan’s post-war prosperity.
  • Panasonic’s son-in-law Toshio Io founded Sanyo as a spare parts subcontractor after World War II. But gradually Sanyo became a competitor to Panasonic. It was subsequently acquired by Panasonic in December 2009.
  • In 1961 Panasonic traveled to the United States and met American businessmen. The company began producing televisions for the American market under the Panasonic brand in 1979 expanded use of the brand to Europe.
  • The company used the national trademark outside of North America from the 1950s to the 1970s (the trademark cannot be used in the United States because it is already in use).

Panasonic brand

  • The inability to use a national brand name led to the establishment of the Panasonic brand in the United States. Over the next few decades Panasonic then introduced more products.
  • These include black and white televisions (1952) electric mixers refrigerators (1953) rice cookers (1959) color televisions and microwave ovens (1966).
  • The company launched its Technics brand of high-fidelity amplifiers in Japan in 1965. This range of high-quality stereo components then became a worldwide favorite most famously the turntables. Like the SL-1200 Phono known for its high performance accuracy and durability.
  • During the 1970s and early 1980s Panasonic continued to produce high quality professional electronics for specialty markets such as shortwave radios. It has also developed a successful line of stereo receivers CD players and other components.
  • In 1968 Panasonic began manufacturing rotary compressors for air conditioners. But in 1971 it started manufacturing absorption refrigeration equipment as well as air conditioning applications.
  • In 1972 the company established its first overseas factory in Malaysia. Also in 1973 the South Korean Anan Group jointly established the Anan National Company.
  • In 1983 Panasonic Corporation a major partner of Panasonic introduced the first Japanese-made computer that was fully compatible with IBM PCs. Inverter air conditioners were also released.

Panasonic created the Panasoft software brand

  • In 1984 Panasonic created the Panasoft software brand which released software for MSX computers between 1984 and 1989. The company also makes its own MSX computers such as the Panasonic FS-A1.
  • In November 1990 Panasonic agreed to acquire Music Corporation of America (MCA). predecessor of Universal Music Group and Universal Pictures before they were purchased for $6.59 billion.
  • Sony bought Columbia Pictures Panasonic’s main competitor. At that time it dominated the home audio and video market with its leading position in the electronics market. It is enhanced by VHC the de facto consumer video cassette standard offered by Panasonic and JVC.
  • Inspired by Sony’s bold pursuit of Hollywood Panasonic believed it could also be a pioneer in the movie industry. However due to the high volatility of the motion picture industry Panasonic later sold 80% of MCA to Seagram in April 1995 for $7 billion.
  • In 1992 Panasonic built the FS-A1GT the last model of the MSX turbo R computer.
  • In 1998 Panasonic sold Anam National to Anam Electronics.

21st centuryfor Panasonic

  • On May 2002 Panasonic Canada celebrated its 35th anniversary in the country. She donated $5 million to help build a “Music City” on the Toronto waterfront. [Twenty one]
  • In 2005 Matsushita Toshiba Picture Display Co. Ltd. (a joint venture created by Panasonic and Toshiba in 2002) ceased production of CRTs at its factory in Horseheads New York.

Panasonic factory

  • On January 19 2006 it announced that it would stop producing analog TVs (30% of its total TV business) starting the next month in order to focus on digital TVs.
  • In 2008 all models of electric shavers produced at Panasonic’s factory were named Panasonic Shavers with both Panasonic and National dropped from their names both for the global market and for the Japanese market.

  • Pioneer also announced its withdrawal from the production of high-definition plasma TV screens purchased several patents and incorporated these technologies into its plasma screens.
  • In April 2011 Panasonic announced that it would reduce its workforce by 40,000 by the end of fiscal 2012 to streamline cross-process operations. Layoffs account for about 10 percent of the collective workforce.
  • In October 2011 Panasonic announced that it would discontinue production of plasma TVs at its Amagasaki Hyogo Prefecture plant by March 2012 slashing the money-losing TV business and cutting 1,000 jobs in the process. In addition it sold part of the Sanyo home appliance business to the Chinese company Haier.

Panasonic announced an agreement with MySpace

  • In January 2012 Panasonic announced an agreement with MySpace for its new joint venture MySpace TV. Myspace TV will allow users to watch live TV while chatting with other users on a laptop tablet or on the TV itself. Through the partnership Myspace TV will be integrated into Panasonic Viera TVs.
  • On May 11 2012 Panasonic announced plans to acquire a 76.2% stake in FirePro Systems an Indian company that provides infrastructure protection and security solutions such as fire alarms fire suppression video surveillance and building management.
  • In April 2012 Panasonic spun off Sanyo D-Solutions a digital camera manufacturer.

Panasonic agreement with Sony

  • In line with the company’s forecast of a net loss of 765 billion yen on November 5 2012 shares fell to 388 yen the lowest level since February 1975. In 2012 shares fell 41%.
  • On November 14 2012 Panasonic said it would cut 10,000 jobs and conduct more divestitures.
  • On May 18 2013 Panasonic announced that it would invest US$40 million to build a factory in Binh Dieng Vietnam which was completed in 2014.
  • In July 2013 Panasonic agreed to buy a 13% stake in the Slovenian home appliance company Gorenje for around €10. million.
  • In July 2013 Panasonic signed an agreement with Sony Corporation to develop an optical disc archive described as an optical disc format for long-term data archiving purposes.
  • In a press release following IFA 2013 Panasonic announced that it has acquired Video Surveillance Services with the aim of expanding its business to cloud-based solutions.

Panasonic Medical Corporation

  • In 2014 Panasonic Medical was acquired by an outside investor. Panasonic Healthcare was later renamed PHCHD which stands for Panasonic HealthCare HD.
  • In July 2014 Panasonic announced that it had reached a basic agreement with Tesla Motors to participate in the Gigafactory a large-scale battery factory that is planned to be built in the United States by the American electric vehicle manufacturer in August 2014. Tesla said that by 2020 It will be built in the southwestern or western United States.
  • The $5 billion factory will employ 6,500 people and cut Tesla’s battery costs by 30 percent. The company said it is looking at potential locations in Nevada Arizona Texas New Mexico and California.
  • In October 2014 Panasonic announced that its initial investment in Tesla’s car battery factory would amount to “tens of billions” of yen. According to the CEO of the company.

Panasonic’s partnership with Photon Interactive

  • In November 2014 Panasonic announced a partnership with Foton Interactive. This to create customized in-store digital signage.
  • In January 2015 Panasonic announced that it had stopped making televisions in China and planned to liquidate its joint venture in Shandong.
  • In March 2015 Panasonic announced plans to acquire ITC Global a Houston-based satellite communications service provider.
  • In April 2015 Panasonic announced its new range and rebranding in South Africa. But the company intends to use South Africas a starting point with Nigeriand Egypt as its main targets.
  • In June 2015 Panasonic entered into an agreement with three Australian energy companies (Red Energy Ergon Energy and ActewAGL) to pilot a home battery storage solution.
  • In November 2015 Panasonic began selling locally harvested produce from the salads of its indoor cultivation facility through the Veggie Life brand in Singapore the country’s first licensed indoor vegetable farm using proprietary Panasonic technology. But Panasonic announced that it opened. Through its subsidiary Panasonic Ecosystem Co. Ltd. New plant in Suzhou China to manufacture a diesel particulate coated (DPF) catalyst filter used for diesel engine materials degradation.

Official Panasonic Partnerships

  • In February 2016 Panasonic established an official partnership with the City of Denver making Denver the “smartest” city in America. Joseph M.   • At the beginning of 2016 Kazuhiro Tsuga President of Panasonic Corporation confirmed that the company plans to invest about 1.6 billion US dollars to build a giant plant in an all-round way.
  • However after announcing pre-orders for the Model 3 in April Panasonic moved forward with production plans and announced a $3.86 billion bond issue most of which will be invested in the gigafactory.
  • In 2016 Panasonic launched its first transparent TV.

Panasonic acquisitions

  • In July 2016 it expressed interest in making acquisitions in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. A source said the company has set aside $10 million for acquisitions or joint ventures.
  • More importantly in August 2018 the company announced that Panasonic would move its European headquarters from the United Kingdom to Amsterdam in October with Brexit looming in order to avoid potential tax issues.

Panasonic is a founding member of the L-Mount Alliance

  • On September 25 2018 Panasonic became a founding member of the L-Mount Alliance and announced two full-frame mirrorless cameras and a line of L-Mount lenses in 2019.
  • The 47MP Panasonic Lumix S1R and 24MP Panasonic Lumix S1 will be Panasonic’s first full-frame mirrorless cameras to provide professional photographers with Lumix Pro support. The cameras will also feature dual image stabilization technology to assist photographers with low-light shots.
  • In 2019 the company sold its semiconductor and security systems business (surveillance cameras).
  • So the company also decided to completely exit the LCD business by 2021 marking the end of display production and focusing resources on the commercial industrial and automotive businesses.

Panasonic charts

  • In 2020 Panasonic pulled out of the vending machine business and failed to achieve profitability falling behind rivals Fuji Electric Sanden and Honor.

  • Also in March 2021 it was reported that Panasonic will buy Blue Yonder for $6.45 billion. Subsequently a 20% stake in Blue Yonder was acquired for 86 billion yen in 2020. The deal is also one of the largest since 2011.
  • In June 2021 the company reportedly sold its entire stake in Tesla for $3.6 billion.
